TKAA2136 TKAAC9270 ABB Cable Assembly

  1. Advanced Line Protection: The relay was configured with directional overcurrent protection, distance protection (with quadrilateral characteristic for accurate fault location), and differential protection. These features enabled fast and selective fault clearance—reducing fault isolation time from the previous 800ms to less than 200ms, minimizing the impact of faults on the grid.
  2. Voltage Stability Control: Equipped with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) logic and reactive power monitoring, the SPAU140C actively adjusted the output of on-load tap changers (OLTCs) in substation transformers. This helped mitigate voltage sags caused by sudden wind power curtailment or peak load increases, maintaining grid voltage within the ±2% range of the nominal 132kV.
  3. Renewable Energy Compatibility: The relay’s flexible communication interfaces (including IEC 61850-8-1, DNP3, and Modbus TCP) allowed seamless integration with the wind farm’s SCADA system. It provided real-time data on power flow, fault events, and relay status to the grid’s central control center, enabling coordinated control between renewable energy sources and the main grid.
  4. Redundancy and Reliability: To ensure uninterrupted operation, each 132kV line and transformer was equipped with two SPAU140C relays in a 2-out-of-2 (2oo2) configuration. This redundancy design eliminated single points of failure, and the relay’s built-in self-monitoring function (e.g., hardware fault detection, software integrity checks) further enhanced system reliability.

Implementation and Outcomes

The project involved retrofitting 28 substations across the regional grid, with a total of 76 SPAU140C relays installed over a 6-month period. ABB’s engineering team collaborated with the grid operator to conduct on-site configuration, testing, and staff training to ensure smooth deployment.
Post-implementation, the grid achieved significant improvements:
  • Fault Clearance Efficiency: The average fault isolation time was reduced by 75%, and the number of wide-area power outages decreased from 12 incidents per year to 2 within the first year of operation.
  • Voltage Stability: Voltage deviations beyond the ±2% threshold dropped from 18% of operating hours to less than 3%, eliminating voltage-related production halts for industrial customers.
  • Operational Visibility: The SPAU140C’s integrated measurement and event logging capabilities provided the control center with real-time insights into grid conditions, enabling predictive maintenance and reducing unplanned downtime for substation equipment.
  • Renewable Integration: The relay’s compatibility with IEC 61850 facilitated the connection of an additional 150MW wind capacity to the grid, without compromising stability—supporting the region’s carbon neutrality goals.
