Installation Precautions for RUSB-02 USB Communication Adapter

The RUSB-02 USB Communication Adapter is a precision interface device for industrial communication (e.g., connecting computers to ABB drives). Proper installation is critical to avoid hardware damage, communication failures, or system malfunctions.

1. Pre-Installation Preparation Precautions

  • Verify Compatibility First:
Do not proceed with installation if the computer’s operating system (OS) is not on the supported list (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Win 7 [32/64-bit], Win 8 [32/64-bit]). Using an unsupported OS will cause driver installation failures or unstable communication.
Also, confirm the target industrial device (e.g., ABB drive model) is compatible with the RUSB-02 (refer to the device’s user manual or ABB’s compatibility matrix).
  • Inspect Hardware Integrity:
Before installation, check the RUSB-02 adapter, USB cable, and fibre optic pair for physical damage (e.g., bent USB pins, cracked fibre optic connectors, frayed cables). Damaged components can short-circuit the adapter or computer, or cause intermittent communication. Do not use damaged parts—contact ABB support for replacements.
  • Prepare a Stable Power Environment:
Ensure the computer and target industrial device (e.g., drive) are connected to a stable power supply. Avoid installing the adapter in environments with frequent power fluctuations (e.g., near heavy machinery) to prevent voltage spikes that may damage the adapter’s internal circuits.

2. Driver Installation Precautions

  • Install Drivers Before Connecting the Adapter:
Never plug the RUSB-02 into the computer’s USB port before installing the required drivers (from the 3AFE64514849 software disc or ABB’s official website). Plugging the adapter first may force the computer to install incorrect generic drivers, leading to unrecognized devices or driver conflicts.
  • Use Official Drivers Only:
Do not download or install third-party drivers for the RUSB-02. Unauthorized drivers may be incompatible, contain malware, or fail to support the adapter’s full functionality. Always use drivers from the original software disc or ABB’s official support portal
  • Restart the Computer After Driver Installation:
After the driver installer shows “Installation Successful,” must restart the computer immediately. Skipping the restart will prevent the OS from fully loading the driver, resulting in the computer failing to detect the RUSB-02 later.
  • Run Installer as Administrator:
On Windows 7/8/Vista, right-click setup.exe (the driver installer) and select “Run as administrator.” This avoids permission errors that may block driver files from being written to the system directory.

3. Hardware Connection Precautions

  • Avoid Hot-Plugging the Fibre Optic Cable:
Do not connect or disconnect the fibre optic pair while the RUSB-02 adapter or target drive is powered on. Fibre optic ports are sensitive to static electricity and voltage surges—hot-plugging can damage the adapter’s optical transceiver or the drive’s communication module. Always power off the drive and unplug the adapter’s USB cable first.
  • Follow Fibre Optic Color-Coding Strictly:
The RUSB-02’s fibre optic ports and cables are color-coded (black and grey). Do not mix up the connectors: connect the black cable to the “Black” port on the adapter and the matching black-labeled port on the drive; repeat for the grey cable. Reverse connections will completely block communication and may cause false fault alarms on the drive.
  • Handle Fibre Optic Connectors Gently:
Fibre optic connectors are fragile—do not twist, pull, or bend the cables sharply (minimum bend radius: follow ABB’s specs, typically ≥50mm for the included cable). Avoid touching the end faces of the connectors (they are sensitive to dust and oil); if contaminated, clean them only with a lint-free optical cleaning cloth (do not use alcohol or other liquids).
  • Use Direct USB Connections (No Hubs):
Connect the RUSB-02’s USB cable directly to the computer’s USB 2.0/3.0 port—do not use USB hubs (even powered ones) during installation. Hubs can introduce power drops or signal interference, leading to the adapter being unrecognized or communication timeouts. If multiple USB ports are available, test a different port if the first one fails to detect the adapter.
